Ashtakoot Guna Milan Explained: How Kundli Matching Actually Works

September 22, 2026

Before marriage, Vedic tradition compares two people's kundlis through a system called Ashtakoot Guna Milan, "ashtakoot" meaning eight kootas, or eight points of comparison. Each koota is scored, and the total, out of 36, is treated as one traditional indicator of compatibility.

The eight kootas

  • Varna (1 point). Compares spiritual/temperamental compatibility based on Moon Rashi groupings.
  • Vashya (2 points). Traditionally read as mutual influence or control between partners.
  • Tara (3 points). Based on the Nakshatras of both charts, linked to general wellbeing and fortune.
  • Yoni (4 points). Each Nakshatra is associated with an animal symbol; this koota compares physical and intimate compatibility.
  • Graha Maitri (5 points). Compares the traditional friendship between the planetary lords of each person's Moon Rashi.
  • Gana (6 points). Groups Nakshatras into Deva, Manushya, or Rakshasa temperaments and compares them.
  • Bhakoot (7 points). Looks at the distance between the two Moon Rashis, tied to family harmony and prosperity.
  • Nadi (8 points). Considered the most significant koota, related to health and progeny; a Nadi mismatch (both partners sharing the same Nadi) is traditionally weighed heavily.

What the total score traditionally suggests

Scores are out of 36. Different traditions and astrologers use somewhat different bands, but a commonly cited rule of thumb treats 18 and above as generally acceptable, 25 and above as favorable, and scores well below 18 as worth discussing further with a knowledgeable astrologer alongside other factors in both charts. These are traditional guidelines, not a hard pass/fail test.

Guna Milan isn't the whole picture

A high or low total doesn't stand alone. Astrologers traditionally also check for Mangal Dosha (Mars placement) in both charts, since it's considered separately from the eight kootas, see What is Mangal Dosha for how that works. Several kootas also draw on Nakshatra rather than Rashi, so it helps to understand how Nakshatra and Rashi differ before reading too much into any single koota.
