Nakshatra vs Rashi: What's the Difference?

September 22, 2026

"What's your rashi?" and "what's your nakshatra?" sound like they're asking the same thing, and they're closely related, both come from where the Moon sat at your birth, but they measure the sky at different levels of detail.

Rashi: the 12 broad divisions

The zodiac is divided into 12 Rashis of 30 degrees each: Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna, Karka, Simha, Kanya, Tula, Vrishchika, Dhanu, Makara, Kumbha, and Meena. When someone asks your "moon sign," they're asking which Rashi the Moon occupied at your birth. It's the broadest, most commonly referenced layer of a birth chart, and it's what daily rashi predictions are based on.

Nakshatra: the 27 finer divisions

Each Rashi is further divided into smaller segments called Nakshatras, 27 of them across the full zodiac, each spanning 13 degrees 20 minutes. Every Nakshatra has its own ruling planet (the Nakshatra lord), its own traditional symbolism, and its own set of associated traits. Since a Rashi is exactly 2.25 Nakshatras wide, most Rashis contain parts of three or four different Nakshatras.

Why the distinction matters

  • Precision. Two people with the same Moon Rashi can have different Nakshatras, and therefore meaningfully different detailed readings.
  • Dasha timing. The Vimshottari Dasha system, which sequences planetary periods across your life, is calculated from your birth Nakshatra, not your Rashi.
  • Match making. Several kootas in Ashtakoot Guna Milan, including Tara, Yoni, and Nadi, are based on Nakshatra rather than Rashi. See how Guna Milan works for the full breakdown.
