Navratna Gemstones: Which Stone Belongs to Which Planet
October 13, 2026
Navratna means "nine gems," one stone for each of the nine classical planets (Navagraha). It's one of the oldest and most recognisable parts of Vedic astrology's gem tradition, rooted in classical texts like the Brihat Jataka.
The nine stones and their planets
- Sun: Ruby
- Moon: Pearl
- Mars: Red Coral
- Mercury: Emerald
- Jupiter: Yellow Sapphire
- Venus: Diamond
- Saturn: Blue Sapphire
- Rahu: Hessonite (Gomed)
- Ketu: Cat's Eye (Lehsunia)
Worn together vs worn alone
Classical tradition treats the full Navratna set, all nine together, differently from a single gemstone. Because it represents every planet at once, a complete Navratna is traditionally considered suitable for anyone, a balanced set rather than a correction aimed at one placement. A single gemstone, by contrast, is traditionally prescribed only after reading a specific birth chart, since it's meant to strengthen or ease the effect of that one planet's placement for that one person. Wearing a single stone without that context is exactly where most of the confusion (and most of the bad advice online) comes from.
Why this isn't something we prescribe
Gemstone recommendations are traditionally tied to a qualified reading of your specific placements, strength, and running Dasha period, not something that can be responsibly handed out generically. Jyotastro computes your real planetary positions and strength, see how your chart is built, but we don't prescribe gemstones from it, that call is better made by a knowledgeable astrologer looking at your full chart in context, not an automated readout.
