What is Lagna (Ascendant) and Why It's the Most Important Point in Your Kundli
September 28, 2026
If your Moon Rashi represents your mind and your Sun represents your core identity, your Lagna represents the lens the rest of your chart is read through. It's arguably the single most important point in a kundli, and also the one most sensitive to getting your birth details exactly right.
What Lagna actually is
Lagna, also called the Ascendant, is the Rashi that was rising on the eastern horizon at the precise moment and place you were born. It becomes the starting point for your 1st house, and every other house in your chart is counted onward from it, see how the 12 houses work for how that numbering flows.
Why it's so time-sensitive
The zodiac appears to rotate all the way around once every 24 hours because of the Earth's own rotation, which means the Lagna changes to a new Rashi roughly every two hours. Compare that to your Moon Rashi, which the Moon takes about 2.25 days to move through, or your Sun Rashi, which the Sun takes about a month to move through. A birth time that's off by even 15-20 minutes can be enough to shift your Lagna into an entirely different Rashi, and with it, the entire house structure of your chart. This is why an accurate birth time matters far more for Lagna than for almost anything else in a kundli.
Lagna, Rashi, and Nakshatra: three different reference points
It's easy to conflate these three, but they answer different questions: your Nakshatra and Moon Rashi come purely from the Moon's position (see Nakshatra vs Rashi), while your Lagna comes from the eastern horizon at your birth moment, independent of where the Moon happened to be. A full reading uses all three together, not just one.
