Rahu and Ketu: The Shadow Planets in Vedic Astrology

September 27, 2026

Rahu and Ketu are two of the nine Grahas used in Vedic astrology, but unlike the Sun, Moon, and the five visible planets, neither one is an actual physical body. They're mathematical points, and understanding what they actually are makes their traditional meaning much clearer.

What they actually are

The Moon's orbit around the Earth is slightly tilted relative to the Earth's path around the Sun. Rahu and Ketu are the two points where those two paths cross, called the lunar nodes. Rahu is the North Node, Ketu is the South Node, and because they're defined by an intersection of orbits rather than a physical object, they're always exactly opposite each other, 180 degrees apart, in every chart, without exception.

How they move

Unlike every other Graha, Rahu and Ketu move retrograde (backward through the Rashis) almost all the time, taking roughly 18 months to cross each sign and about 18.6 years to complete a full cycle around the zodiac. That slow, backward motion is part of why classical texts treat them as unlike the other seven planets in temperament.

What they traditionally represent

  • Rahu. Worldly desire, ambition, and amplification, traditionally associated with intense pursuit of material goals, and sometimes illusion or obsession when unchecked.
  • Ketu. Detachment and release, traditionally read as the counterbalance to Rahu, associated with spirituality, past-tendencies already mastered, and a pull away from material attachment.

Because they always sit opposite each other, most traditional readings treat them as a pair, whatever house Rahu occupies, Ketu occupies the house exactly across from it, so the two are usually read together rather than in isolation.

Where to look for them in a reading

Rahu and Ketu's house placement (see how the 12 houses work) and their Nakshatra both factor into a full reading, and Ketu specifically rules the first Mahadasha period in the Vimshottari Dasha sequence for many charts, see how Vimshottari Dasha works for how that timing system is built.
