Vimshottari Dasha Explained: Your Planetary Time Periods

September 27, 2026

A kundli tells you where the planets were at your birth. Vimshottari Dasha is the traditional system that tells you when, in your own timeline, each planet's themes are considered most active. It's the most widely used Dasha system in Vedic astrology.

Where the sequence starts

Vimshottari Dasha is calculated from your Moon's Nakshatra at birth, not your Rashi, each of the 27 Nakshatras has a ruling planet, and that ruling planet's period is the one running at your birth. See Nakshatra vs Rashi for how Nakshatra is worked out in the first place.

The nine periods and their lengths

The full Vimshottari cycle runs 120 years across all nine Grahas, each with a fixed classical length:

  • Ketu: 7 years
  • Venus: 20 years
  • Sun: 6 years
  • Moon: 10 years
  • Mars: 7 years
  • Rahu: 18 years
  • Jupiter: 16 years
  • Saturn: 19 years
  • Mercury: 17 years

These always run in this same fixed order, what changes from person to person is only the starting point (based on birth Nakshatra) and how far into the first period you already were at birth.

Mahadasha and Antardasha

Each of those nine periods is called a Mahadasha, a "major period." Within every Mahadasha, all nine planets also get a smaller sub-period called an Antardasha, so a person's exact placement in time is usually described as being in, for example, "Venus Mahadasha, Saturn Antardasha," a Venus-ruled major period currently coloured by a Saturn-ruled sub-period. This is why two people in the same Mahadasha can still describe very different experiences, the Antardasha layer adds real texture.

How this differs from Sade Sati

It's easy to mix Dasha up with Sade Sati, but they're built from entirely different mechanics. Vimshottari Dasha is fixed at birth from your Nakshatra and runs on its own internal clock. Sade Sati is Saturn's real, ongoing transit relative to your Moon Rashi, recalculated from wherever Saturn actually is in the sky right now. See Sade Sati Explained for that separate system.
