What is a Kundli? A Complete Guide to Vedic Birth Charts
September 22, 2026
A kundli is a map of where every planet sat in the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. In Vedic astrology, that snapshot is treated as a kind of blueprint, and reading it well starts with understanding what's actually on it.
Why your exact birth time and place matter
A kundli isn't a generic reading based on your birth date alone. It's calculated from real astronomical positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at your specific birth date, time, and place, which is why even two people born on the same day can have meaningfully different charts. A birth time that's off by even 15-20 minutes can shift your Lagna (Ascendant) into a different Rashi, which changes how the rest of the chart is read.
The core pieces of a kundli
- Lagna (Ascendant). The Rashi rising on the eastern horizon at your birth moment. It sets the starting point for the 12 houses (Bhavas) in your chart.
- The 12 Bhavas (houses). Each house represents a life area (self, wealth, siblings, home, children, health, partnership, and so on), and which planets sit in which house shapes the traditional interpretation of that area.
- The 9 Grahas (planets). Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, plus the two lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. Where each one falls, by house and by Rashi, is the raw material of a kundli reading.
- Rashi and Nakshatra. Your Moon's Rashi (often called your "moon sign") and Nakshatra (a finer 27-part division of the zodiac) are both derived from the Moon's exact position. See Nakshatra vs Rashi: What's the Difference?
- Dasha periods. The Vimshottari Dasha system divides your life into planetary periods (Mahadasha) and sub-periods (Antardasha), used traditionally to time when a particular planet's themes are considered most active.
How Jyotastro calculates yours
Your kundli on Jyotastro is generated from real astronomical computation of planetary positions for your exact birth details, not a templated or randomized reading. The chart, planet table, and Dasha timeline you see are all derived directly from that calculation.
